Archive for the ‘Opinion’ Category

This is a fair warning that this is somewhat of a opinionated post. Please realize these are my thoughts and you don’t have to agree or disagree with them. I’m simply sharing them because I read this article yesterday and it made me really sad and at the same time angry.

Basically it says that 42% of Americans will be obese by 2030. 42%! That is nearly half the country. This nation has a HUGE problem with weight. I read through some of the comments and I’ve seen similar articles where people blame everything under the sun.

Fast food and highly processed food are making us fat. It’s true that they don’t help. Healthy food is too expensive. I think it certain instances this can be true but  I always find great deals on fresh, whole foods that are a fraction of the cost of processed stuff. There isn’t enough time to cook and shop in a day. If you don’t plan ahead it can be hard to do this but it’s not impossible and can take as little as 5-10 minutes to plan and 20 minutes to shop. But the one argument I don’t hear very often is the argument that it’s the individual’s fault.

I firmly believe that as much as someone can blame everything for their weight the ultimate responsibility lies solely on them. I take full accountability for the fact that a few years ago I was the one downing Oreos and going through the drive through several times a week.   I was the one drinking soda and eating late night snacks. No one put a gun to my head and making me eat that Taco Bell or eat a piece of cake. I did it. I put that food in my mouth and I suffered the consequences of it. I also was the one to make the decision to change that all.

Convenience is killing us, plain and simple. I think people have become lazy, complacent, and don’t want to take accountability for their own actions. Everyone is looking for quick fixes and easy outs. As someone who has lost weight and had terrible habits I can attest that it’s not easy. It’s never been easy and it never will be. But small changes and little differences can make huge differences. Sure get your burger but how about get a salad on the side and skip the bun. Or instead of taking the bus to the corner right by your house get off a few stops early and walk. Park your car further back in the parking lot so you have to walk a few feet more. Instead of buying those bags of french fries with who knows what in them save a few dollars and buy your own potatoes and make your own fries.

It’s time people stop blaming the government and the food industry for the obesity issue that will plague us for generations if we don’t get it under control now. It’s time people start looking at themselves to take accountability. It’s time we start taking our lives back and stop giving into what is convenient and simple. It’s not easy and takes work. But at the end of the day I feel energized, happy and content with the decisions I’ve made to be happier and healthier. And that is the best feeling in the world.
